Lesson 4: Drought and Famine on the African Horn

- Lesson 1: You will be working in groups of four. One person will read and take notes about famine, one person will read and take notes about drought, one person will read and take notes about malnutrition, and one person will read and take notes about displacement.
- Be ready to teach the group about your assigned topic. If you finish the notes early, you may begin working on your section of the PowerPoint presentation.
- Lesson 2: get together with your groups members and share your notes. Teach each other and share your knowledge. Complete the Famine in the Horn of Africa graphic organizer. Work together to complete a PowerPoint presentations that will teach others about the crisis on the African Horn. What vocabulary words do people need to know? Why should people care? How can people help?
- Lesson 3: Complete the PowerPoint. Presentations.

- What photo captures your attention the most? Explain why.
- Look at the photos showing people. What do you think is going on? How might the people in the photo be feeling? What might they be thinking?
- Find a photo showing people helping and describe what is happening.
- What photo might someone experiencing famine want others to see? Why? What would they NOT want others to see?
- How do you feel when you look at these photos? How might other people react to them? Who do you think took these photos and why?
- Choose 4 - 6 photos that best represent what happened on the African Horn.
- Use these photos to create a photo story that will create awareness and encourage fundraising.
- Caption each photo what an explanation of the photo's meaning and importance.
- Print these photos and captions. Create a mini-poster to raise awareness.
